Oprah Magazine Body-Shames With Crop Top Advice, and Instagram Fights Back: See the Photos!

Haters gonna hate—but these girls look amazing!

The Oprah Magazine ruffled more than a few feathers on Wednesday, July 8, when its latest issue hit stands with this style advice: “[You can pull off a crop top] if (and only if!) you have a flat stomach.”

Well, more than one Instagram user—including Brooklyn-based writer Tamara Nital, who first posted about the blurb, and plus-size model Tess Holliday—had something to say about that tip! Those ladies and more hopped on the social media site to express their disappointment with the mag and to share crop top-clad photos of themselves with this hashtag: #RocktheCrop.

Speaking on the almost instantaneous movement, Holliday, who’;s also a self-proclaimed body-confidence advocate, said to Us Weekly, “I’;ve been wearing crop tops for about 3 years now, and I felt like I had to say something. Mostly because, [the Oprah Magazine note] went against everything I advocate for.”

The bodacious beauty (whose photos are captured by fiance Nick Holliday) added that she refuses to give in to body-shaming. “Crop tops make me feel sexy in a subtle way,” she told Us. “Plus, I get stares in public—and I like ruffling feathers. I just hope one day seeing a fat girl in a crop top isn’;t that ‘weird.'”

Meanwhile, the magazine has heard the complaints of its readers and released this statement: “We support, encourage, and empower all women to look great, feel confident, and live their best lives—in this case, we could have expressed it better. We appreciate the feedback and will be more mindful going forward.”

Nevertheless, the fight for body acceptance rages on online. Scroll down to see more of the women who posted #RocktheCrop photos!
